Appendages

There are many ways to make hands for your creatures, this is just one that we use to make quick hand blanks with minimum mess.

Take the latex glove and insert SE Foam into each of the fingers. Gradually working your way to the back of the glove. Don't overdo it. Leave the glove open and allow it to dry for a week. It will balloon up a little. After it's dry, peel away the latex glove and shape the misshapen hand. Fingers should be cut at the joints. Insert Floral arrangement wire coated with elmers glue through the fingers. The wire allows you to form the fingers into whatever position you need. On the wrist end, bore out a hole to accept the PVC Pipe and attach with elmer's glue. This allows you to attach the hands easily to the arms. Se Foam will continue to expand unless checked. The easiest way to do this, is to cover the hand in a fine Paper-mache mixture. You can make this from boiled toilet paper and elmer's glue or use celluclay. Finish the hand by painting and applying fake fingernails (toy aisle fingernails are cheaper)

Another way to make hands requires the use of a moto-tool, but the hands last a really long time. If you're going to do yearly haunts this is the way to go. The hands are actually made from wood for the palm and dowels for the fingers. Cut the dowels about 1" long . Drill a small hole through the center of the dowel to accept a piece of cut coat hanger. Leave about 1" of the coat hanger to attach the fingers to the hand. Bend the fingers how you want them then fill the cracks with celluclay. Use the moto-tool to sand the fingers to shape and etch the joint and nail lines.

Feet can be made quickly using ¼ " plywood cut into the shape that you want and covered with SE Foam. Take time building up the ankle area and be sure to insert a piece of PVC Pipe or wood depending on attachment. Set it aside to dry, then shape into form. Cover with a thin coat of Paper-mache then finish with a coat of polyurethane.

A quick ribcage can be made by cutting a blank out of poster board. Glue Floral arrangement wire to each of the ribs. When dry, carefully bend the ribs to shape the ribcage. Cover each rib in SE-Foam and allow to dry. Paint and cover with Polyurathane. I have also made bones this way to use on wall displays. Rotting flesh can be added with a little tissue soaked in Elmer's Glue.
